Reading Notes: Homer's Illiad, Part A

Homer's Illiad retold by A. J. Church

The story starts off with Homer telling us about a beautiful princess everyone wanted to marry. Before she had gotten married people knew that someone would come and try to take her from her husband and if that were to happy everyone would need to try and bring her back. The couple ran away to the City of Troy which was known as one of the strongest cities back then. The fighting took place for nine years and in that time the army was weak from being far from home for so long so they decided to raid other cities for supplies. I think the reason this all started was because Agamemnon was being greedy and wanted everything for himself. He refused to give the Priest's daughter back which made the Gods come after him and his fight to bring back the princess.

Zeus on his throne, Source

The God's have a huge part in this story even when they don't want to. Zeus tried not to intervene but saw what was happening as decided he needed to. Achilles didn't fight Agamemnon when they came to take the priest daughter from him because he had given up on the fight. Achilles mother is the reason that Achilles fought because without her persuading Zeus to help the Trojans then Achilles wouldn't have fought. Hector is the brother of the man who stole the girl from the King. He is fighting to protect his brother while his wife and child are scared for him to go. Even after all the chiefs went to Achilles he still decided he wasn't going to fight because he was furious at Agamemnon. Patroclus was Achilles most dear friend and he wanted to at least fight in Achilles armor so that the other army might be intimidated. Achilles allowed this but made Patroclus promise not to try and take Hector by himself because he knew he wasn't able to. Hector killed Patroclus after Patroclus thought he could take the city himself.
